No Limits: An SCA Artisan Talent Swap [16 Aug 2011|11:56am]

Nobelese Largesse Presents

No Limits: An SCA Artisan Talent Swap

How it works:

Each participant will be assigned a recipient for whom they will craft something in the SCA art form of their choice. Each participant will also be assigned to another participant as that person's recipient.

Materials cost for the item should not exceed $25. The participant will get their recipient's information shortly after September 23rd. Delivery is to be completed by January 31st. Deadline to withdraw from the swap is January 21st, barring last minute major project failure, for which an extension may be granted. Failure to drop out by the deadline or failure to deliver your project will lead to your being banned from all future Nobelese Largesse swaps, and your recipient will be notified of your failure to fulfill the bargain. Remember, for everyone to get a shiny thing, everyone must make a shiny thing.

So, what do we mean when we say no limits? We mean that outside of your material cost limit and your deadline, we really do mean no limits. Want to bombard your recipient with items? Go for it. Want to push your own limits of artistry? Absolutely. Want to go as authentic as you dare? Yes. All of that. And, while you're at it, have fun with it!

Sign up is open until September 16th. To sign up, visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/R5NFRRJ and fill out the survey with all of your information. The more detailed you are, the more it helps your secret artisan on their gift for you. Once we have all your information, you will receive a confirmation email. Once sign-ups close, you will receive your recipient's information.

If you find you can not complete an assignment, please email the moderators at NobeleseLargess@gmail.com so we can try to find a replacement for you. All matches will be kept confidential, but if you fail to notify us and fail to deliver, we reserve the right to narc you out and you will not be allowed to play the next time.

Have fun, be creative, and bring your A-game.

P.S. Feel free to get other people from other kingdoms involved. It's much more fun that way!

A missive from His Excellency Duncan Fearmac MacLeod unto the populace of Calontir. [08 Nov 2010|10:09am]

zephyrofgod
From Baron Sir Duncan Fearmac MacLeod unto to my friends and family of Calontir, and to all various and sundry who knew Celgur Ulf.
Greetings and Salutations.

As most of you know, our friend Celegur Ulf has passed from this world to the next. Many people have offered assistance if there is anything that they can do. Many have approached the family and myself about what sort of memorial would be fitting in the SCA context. Many excellent ideas have been brought forward that would be fitting tributes to this good man, and thank you for these suggestions.

It is my belief that Celegur would ask us each to mourn in our own ways, and to live life to it's fullest. He would also say that We should not spending a day mourning that could be spent doing the things we love, with the people that we love.

So, in this spirit, we will not be having a formal SCA memorial for Celegur.

However, at this next Toys For Tots Tournament I would ask this one simple act in memory of this man who loved children and would give the shirt off of his back to anyone in need: Please bring a toy in his name. Buy an extra toy when you are buying your own donations, and put Celegur Ulf on label when you turn it in to the toy counters at the event. If you cannot come to Toys For Tots Tournament, feel free to donate a toy to this charity in your home town.

Let his word fame live on. Let a child's joy in this life, light his soul in the next.

Baron Sir Duncan Fearmac MacLeod

Please forward this to your local lists or anywhere it will reach people who knew Celegur.

SCA Census! [02 Aug 2010|01:35pm]

zephyrofgod
Apologies in advance if anyone has received this missive already and has filled it out.

---

The SCA 2010 Census is now LIVE!

The SCA is us, you and me doing what we do. But who are we, what do we do, and how can we support each other to make the SCA the type of organization we can be proud of?

The SCA 2010 Census committee has been asked by the Board of Directors to develop a census-level survey that will help us to address key issues facing the SCA. These issues affect our everyday experience in the SCA; from "pay for participation" issues and award structures to quantitative, qualitative, motivational, and behavioral demographics such as age, gender, activities and interest areas, and reasons for joining, remaining in, and leaving the SCA.

Because this is a "census-level" survey, we are attempting to reach each and every SCA participant, regardless of whether or not they are paid members or are currently active. Everyone's voice is important to the success of this project.

This information will help us, as an organization, move forward into the next decade, to identify, address and work on current issues and gain a better, deeper understanding into what makes the SCA what it is today. Your responses to these questions will also help us create a plan for making the SCA better organization in the future. The only way we can understand what is important is by hearing from you.

The survey is completely anonymous, you will never be asked for information that will identify you.

The SCA 2010 Census Survey is available here:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/%20s/SCA2010Census

The Survey will remain open until December 1st. Once the data collection is completed, the results of this survey will be made available on the SCA 2010 Census website. All data that is collected or published will remain completely anonymous and will not be sold or shared beyond this survey's purpose.

If you would like to learn more about the SCA 2010 Census, if you have questions or ideas about the project, please contact the committee at scacensus2010@ sca.org [OMIT SPACES]

Please take the time to fill out the survey. The voices of each and every participant in the SCA whether you are currently active or not, will help us to better understand the SCA and enable us to grow and flourish as an organization.

Sincerely,

The SCA 2010 Census Committee

Pennsic War calendars are now on sale for the holidays. They make great stocking stuffers for your SCAdian friends! At Christmas time, there will still be 7 months left on them. So, if you’re wondering what gift to give your squires, retainers or peers, just go to Darter’s Depot on ebay. And yes, I will accept personal checks if you want to buy calendars but not use ebay or paypal.

Happy holidays!

Dear Gentles:

I'm not sure if this has made the rounds yet, but the Kingdom of Calontir now has a Facebook group. It's not very active at this writing, but we are gaining members at almost a weekly basis.

If you are interested, please click here. If you are not a member of Facebook, you will need to join, otherwise, membership is completely open.

If there are any further questions, I would be delighted to field them.

Question for Marshals [12 Nov 2007|10:25am]

Does a seneschal and a marshal in training (non-warranted) at a practice make it ok for fighting to happen or do you have to have a fully warranted marshal?

Drama [09 Nov 2007|02:28pm]

lavenalgm
[ mood | contemplative ]

Ok I am just becoming seneschal of a Canton in Iowa, yes the one I taked about a month or so ago, that has had lots of drama, how is the best way to carefully avoid such issues in the future.

Here is my example:
We were required to put a bid in for coronation, several members got together and made the plan and submitted it. They excluded the seneschal, which i believe has to be included for legal reasons, and did not tell the population. I would have spoken up and wanted to talk the to people involved. How would people recommend I go about it. Two of the major people involved in situations like this have been members for a very long time and have awards, where as I have been an on and off again non-paying member for 3-5 years, geez is it really that long.

Anyways looking for any communication tips, I have been reading up on the seneschal handbook also.

Lilies War Theme Announced [10 Oct 2007|10:00am]

purplellamaboi
[ mood | anxious ]

From the CalonNet::

Lilies Announcement!

As is tradition in the heartlands, Their Royal Majesties Calontir have decreed that a grand tournament and melee be organized for all of their nobles, knights, and commons; as well as their Royal Cousins and their subjects from across the Known World. This tournament is to be held on the ground of their forefathers, the Field of Lilies, and is to consist of all manner of pageantry, display and entertainment for all who might attend.

It is no secret that the artisans of this kingdom are some of the most diverse in the world; and to that end, their Majesties have asked that all who might participate in this fair organize themselves into guilds and form alliances in order to field teams for this display. These guilds and alliances need not be officially chartered within this fair kingdom, yet all must be able to present a sufficient force upon the field that might last for a week, and include not only artisans, but knights, huscarls, fyrdmen, archers and men-at-arms. Forces should be able to challenge each other in the customary pastimes of tournament, melee, archery, games, art and craft displays, shopping and partying, to name but a few. We would encourage all who dedicate themselves to a craft to consider sponsoring a force for this war; be you metalworker, fiber artist, cook, potter, baker, or any of the other myriad of artisans and craftsmen that this Kingdom is blessed with.

Petitions for such forces must be presented to their Majesties, no later than the Kris Kinder Market, traditionally held in the Crown’s lands of the Barony of Forgotten Sea. Any exceptions after this date will be granted solely at the discretion of Their Majesties.

The Event Stewards for this next Lilies are Baroness Diana MacLean (baronessd@hotmail.com ) and Baron Mikhail Nikolaevich (mstraatm@gmail.com). If you are interested in sponsoring a side for this next Lilies, please contact us at your earliest convenience. Even if you don’t think you have enough for a “whole” side, let us know, perhaps we could arrange an alliance with another guild or group. Again, your side does not have to be an “official” Calontir guild, just a group of artisans willing to contribute to the overall fun of the war.

We look forward to hearing from many of you!

Pulled into the Fray - Advice please. [18 Sep 2007|11:18am]

lavenalgm
[ mood | contemplative ]

I  am not really new to the SCA, been sporadically active for about 3-4 years now.  I am at a lost to what I should do with a situation that has been developing in our group.  Mainly it is drama but it has escalated to the point that we are lossing members because of other members telling the higher levels possible lies.  (I have no clue what is true anymore) Some members are trying to just that our group just get banned and then they will start a group excluding who they feel are trouble makers.  I would love to become more involved in a official role, but am not sure if I should put out the effort if I will just come under attack also, or if our group is going to be disolved.  I understand any social group comes with drama, I work at a political active non-profit, but I don't think the level of drama in our group is going to allow us to get any new members, let alone keep all existing members.  I have been tactfully trying to coverup the drama/division when new people are around but it seems to never end.  I am not sure how to get this stopped or resolved and am starting to get dragged into the middle.

Any groups near ames [07 Aug 2007|02:59pm]

lavenalgm
Who are very easy going about SCA rules. I tried to take a friend of mine to A&S and she was unfortunately turned off by the rule heavy/not welcoming atmosphere. I know she would enjoy participating but would have to take a evening off a week to make the local group. I was hoping to prove it was worth it with the other event but that seems to not have happened. Sorry sure this sounds critical of the group but even I felt a little uncomfortable being their and I was invited

[[My apologies to those who see this more than once; it's been cross-posted to a handful of communities to get the most and best bandwidth....]]

A new community have been created for those members of the Society for Creative Anachronism who have Near Eastern, Middle Eastern, and Far Eastern personas:

sca_silkroad

This community is here for you all to share where you are at with your SCA journey...whether that's in your persona development, garb making skills, or dance training. No topic is off-topic...as long as what you are talking about deals with the Near East, Middle East, or Far East.

Are you wanting to get help translating some text you've found? Need help interpreting that miniature you've been staring at for weeks? Wondering what dance technique works for everyone else? Found something really cool on E-Bay you need to share? These are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of what this community is here for.

So...don't hesitate! Spread the word, join in, and start talking and sharing!!!
